History

1834 – Fantaisie-Impromptu is written1. This is the version that would be used in Fontana’s publication.
1835 – Fantaisie-Impromptu is in its final2 form and is dedicated to Frances Sarah d’Este (Born Kibble) ) (This version of Fantaisie-Impromptu will remain undiscovered for over 100 years).
1849 – Chopin dies in Paris.
1853 – Chopin’s family authorizes Fontana to publish Chopin’s unpublished works.
1855 – Fontana publishes.

It is considered that Artur Rubinstein “discovered” this work in 1960. It was subsequently published. However, there are strong reasons to believe that Fontana was aware of the d’Este Manuscript when going through Chopin’s Posthumous Works.
